Erin Sargent

Erin Sargent, MKin, CSEP-CEP

Sport Physiologist

“My career has evolved since graduation, but my success was built on the great foundation I received in the Kinesiology program at Lakehead” says Erin.  Shortly after graduation, Erin started a personal training business in Thunder Bay. At the time she was one of the only few females working in the field as a personal trainer in Thunder Bay. It was this experience which solidified that she wanted to work in an applied setting. Her venture proved to be very successful and by the second year, Erin had a waiting list for taking new clients. However, when the third year rolled around, Erin realized that she wanted to further her education, so she chose to return to the University of Calgary to complete her Masters of Kinesiology (MKin). The Master’s program at the University of Calgary, gave Erin lots of different opportunities to advance her knowledge and skills. During this time one of the most valuable things she learnt, was her passion for teaching. Following graduation, Erin returned to Lakehead to teach for one semester in the lab before securing a sessional teaching position at Humber College in the Fitness and Health Promotion (FHP) Program. Erin loved teaching at Humber, unfortunately Toronto was not for her. So, when a full-time, permanent position as a professor at Niagara College in the same program came up Erin jumped at the opportunity. Erin taught in the FHP program for 8 years and during this time she realized that there was a need in the Niagara Region for more qualified Certified Exercise Physiologists and Kinesiologists. In order to respond to that need, Erin, along with a colleague, developed the Exercise Science for Health and Performance Program. This is a one-year graduate certificate designed for Kinesiology grads that need to build their practical skills and knowledge to feel confident and be successful in their field. By the time Erin reached the ten-year mark in teaching, she felt the desire to step away from the field of teaching and back into the field of exercise physiology.  Erin accepted a position as an Exercise Physiologist for the Canadian Sport Institute in Calgary (CSIAB), and has been here since. Erin now works as the lead Anthropometry for CSIAB, where she is responsible for conducting physiological testing sessions, interpreting results, setting performance standards, as well as training and monitoring. Erin also works as the Lead Physiologist for Wrestling Canada and the Physical Performance Lead for the National Para Hockey Team. Fun fact: In her spare time, Erin fosters dogs to prepare them for adoptions.
